3rd Al-Khorezmi International
Mathematical Olympiad for Undergraduate Students
May 26-31, 2025 Urgench State University, Uzbekistan
Welcome
The Al-Khorezmi International Mathematical Olympiad (AKHIMO) is a mathematics competition for undergraduate students. Its mission is to enhance intellectual potential and inspire students to pursue STEM education. AKHIMO aims to identify and nurture students' creative talents and research interests while fostering an international network and intercultural relationships among participants from various countries. Additionally, it celebrates the significant contributions of Muhammad Al-Khorezmi to fundamental sciences. The primary goal of AKHIMO is to motivate students to engage deeply with the exact sciences and broaden their international collaborations, all while exploring the scientific heritage of Central Asia, particularly Uzbekistan. The inaugural AKHIMO took place at Urgench State University from October 26-31, 2018, featuring teams from 58 universities, including 35 institutions from 20 countries. The second Olympiad was held at Karakalpak State University from October 23-29, 2023, with participation from 40 universities across 14 countries. The third AKHIMO is scheduled for May 26-31, 2025, at Urgench State University, where we expect to host 100 teams from approximately 50 countries. Although AKHIMO is primarily an individual competition, there is also a team component. The official language of AKHIMO is English.

Olympiad Preparation and Resources
The best way to prepare for the AKHIMO-2025 is going over the problems of the U.S. Putnam competition that are archived on Kiran Kedlaya's website: https://kskedlaya.org/putnam-archive/
Eligibility
Only current undergraduate students from Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are eligible to participate in AKHIMO. Each HEI may send one team, which consists of one faculty member (team leader/chaperone), three students (team members) and one additional student (optional). The team leader must be an employee of the HEI. The primary role of the team leader is to register the team members on the Olympiad website https://akhimo.urdu.uz (thus certifying that students meet the eligibility criteria; students cannot register on their own) and serve as a point of contact for communications and travel logistics (arrival/departure/visa, etc.). A team leader does not have to be a faculty member; any university affiliated staff or a graduate student can serve as a team leader. While it is preferrable that the team leader travel to Urgench together with the team, if the team leader is not able to travel, the Urgench State University will assign a local graduate students to the team whose primary role will be to organize local travel logistics (airport pick-up/transfer, hotel check-in/check-out, local transportation) for the team, and will serve as a local guide when the teams are taken to sightseeing tours.
The Al-Khorezmi International Mathematical Olympiad will be held in Khorezm region of Uzbekistan.
Khorezm is one of the historical and cultural centers of Uzbekistan, drawing tourists to the Silk Road city of Khiva, recognized as one of the country's four UNESCO World Heritage sites. The city showcases remarkable architecture and historical monuments that date back over 2,500 years. In addition to its rich cultural heritage, Khorezm boasts a significant scientific legacy, particularly in the history of science, offering a unique research environment for students. Notable scientists from the 8th to 11th centuries, including Al-Khorezmi and Al-Biruni, were born in this region and made lasting contributions to our scientific knowledge. For example, the word "algebra" originates from the title of Al-Khorezmi's book, and "algorithm" is derived from his name. By visiting the historical sites in Khorezm where these scientists conducted their work, students will gain a deeper understanding of the scientific advancements from the 8th to 15th centuries and appreciate the profound contributions of Al-Khorezmi and Al-Biruni to mathematics.
Funding
Local organizers are pleased to announce that they will cover all expenses for each team (one faculty member and four students) during their stay in Urganch. This includes lodging for five nights, all meals, local transportation, and excursions to Khiva and Urganch, made possible by generous funding from the government of Uzbekistan. Additionally, the organizers are available to assist with logistics for those interested in touring Nukus, Bukhara, Samarkand, and Tashkent.
